This plugin does an effective job at displaying a gallery on a site. But there is a issue if you upgrade past the 2.0.66 version. Let me explain, on a clients site, I utilize the simple grid layout of thumbnail images for gallery presentation.
Upgrading to something past 2.0.66, breaks the clients site layout/presentation view by REMOVING the GRID view (4 rows, 4 cols etc.) and makes it a single row per thumbnail. I thought this was a conflict of code somewhere and after wasting my time with troubleshooting and viewing release notes found out it was due to a mischievous plugin author.
Apparently you have to now PAY for the thumbnail grid view (yes very simple image thumbnail) layout in the latest versions. I did not and still don’t see that warning in any upgrade release notes.
If the plugin author(s) offered a spectacular slideshow upgrade/features in a pro version/paid that would be different. But to have to pay for a simple thumbnail grid layout, that makes the free version useless and hardly worth payment for a pro version.
So for now, no more upgrades and when required to upgrade due to conflict with WordPress functionality/security, will be pursuing a different gallery plugin for the clients site.
Hope this helps those before you waste a bunch of time wondering what your gallery looks different after upgrading.

@nwdwp – There is absolutely no grounds for this assertion. You do not have to pay to have NextGEN Gallery work correctly. The NextGEN Plus and NextGEN Pro extensions do just that, they extend the functionality of NextGEN Gallery.

If you are having issues with the NextGEN Basic Thumbnail display only rendering in a single vertical row most cases will point to something interfering with the JavaScript and CSS NextGEN Gallery uses not being written to the page or post as the case may be.

If you would like some assistance in trying to sort this out then by all means feel free to start a new topic in the support forums or feel free to submit a Bug Report (https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/) with your site specifics.

    Thanks!

Hey @nwdwp – just wanted to hop in and second Cais on this. A basic thumbnail gallery should definitely be displaying your thumbnails in a grid. So if that’s not happening, there’s something interfering. In the past if we’ve seen this, it’s often been a plugin conflict.

But you definitely don’t need to upgrade to Pro to get a basic thumbnail grid (though there’s lots of other great stuff in the Plus and Pro versions).

So if you’d like a hand looking at it, please do post a thread in the forums. Cais is great at helping people work through these kinds of issues.

    Thanks. (Erick)

@cais, @edanzer thanks for your feedback and replies. After going back and doing some further troubleshooting and testing with the latest version V2.0.66.29 (that was released 9/17) I found what I believe is the culprit.

I had to not just disable but remove the Ng Gallery Optimizer Modified plugin that was installed on the site. Which honestly was not doing anything over and beyond what NextGen plugin was already doing so am leaving it removed.

For others reading this thread, this issue has been resolved and was indeed a conflict with another plug-in, preventing NextGEN’s thumbnail view from displaying in a grid correctly.

    Thanks all!

@nwdwp – Thanks for the follow-up. I’m really happy you were able to sort out the issue and found a working solution for your site.

    – Cais.

PS: Would this change your rating of NextGEN Gallery?

@nwdwp – Just following up on some old reviews.

Sounds like this issue was resolved and ended up being a plugin conflict. Given that, along with lots of other improvements since the time of your review, we’re wondering if you might consider revising your start rating?

A two-star rating is somewhat punitive unless there’s really something there to warrant it.

Let us know if you have questions. Thanks. (Erick)
