• Hi, we have 5 multisites on a single server. All of them have multiple domains. Suddenly, sites in 1 multisite give a this message.

    Not Found

The requested URL was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The other multisites and domains are active and work normal.

    Anyone an idea?

That’s a server level hard 404 isn’t it? As opposed to a WP themed “Nothing found” sort of “soft” 404. That means WP never received control of the request like it is supposed to. Using the root domain, are you able to access admin screens that involve actual .php file names in the URL? Like /wp-admin/index.php. If so, at least the domain is getting to the right place. If not, there is an issue in DNS or virtual host.

If you can access the admin screens, go to Network Setup. Verify your .htaccess rules conform to what is shown on the setup screen. And that there is no remnant of the rules from the initial single site installation. These rules pass control to WP when there are no actual server files matching the request.

Via FTP or your hosting file manager, confirm the permissions for .htaccess. 644 isn’t unusual, but sometimes more stringent permissions are applied. After noting what the permissions currently are, you might try 664 to see if that helps any. If not, restore the previous permissions.
