Doesn't belong in the WP plugin directory
-
Looking at the anti-spam plugins I noticed that Anti-Spam by CleanTalk hasn’t as many users as others with an average rating of 5 stars, but the plugin got rated 8 times more often.
– WP-SpamShield Anti-Spam: 100,000+ Active Installs, 204 ratings
– Anti-spam: 100,000+ Active Installs, 104 ratings
– Anti-Spam by CleanTalk: 30,000+ Active Installs, 871 ratingsImpressive, huh?
Especially since the other two are pretty awesome.Reading through the description, nearly at the end I read:
CleanTalk is premium anti-spam service for WordPress, please look at the pricing. The plugin works with cloud anti spam service CleanTalk. CleanTalk has free trial for 14 days. We try to provide anti-spam service at the highest level and we can not afford to offer a free version of our service, as this will immediately affect the quality of providing anti-spam protection.
Usually, when a plugin is not free, it gets a lot of bad reviews. And, while I don’t bother if it’s clear from the description, imo that is rightfully so. Basically people expect plugins to be free in the directory, open source, you know. I fully understand that many awesome plugins and services cannot be free, but when someone wants to buy a plugin, they do not look in the directory. So, when you let someone read a description, or try it out, solely to find out that it’s a trial version, you waste their time.
So, how come Anti-Spam by CleanTalk has so many positive reviews in contrary to other plugins that offer a free plugin, yet not a free service?
Looking at the positive reviews, I see many who never wrote a review before and even people who never wrote anything in the forum before.Weird, huh?
So, I decided to make an exception and to write an honest review.I didn’t try the plugin, but feel the plugin directory shouldn’t be part of a marketing strategy, unless a plugin has at least something useful to offer, for free.
