• I have a client who runs their site on Windows Server 2003. They also use IIS instead of apache. They fulfill the other requirements such as;

    PHP 4.2 or greater
    MySQL 3.23.23 or greater

Will it be possible to still run WP from their site?

  • I tell everyone to use a Unix/Linux server instead of Windows. There are certain plugins for WP that don’t work very well if the site is hosted on a Windows server, along with other slightly annoying little quirks that can pop up out of nowhere. That’s been my experience, anyway.

I don’t know how the IIS instead of Apache will affect it, I’m not that tech savvy, but am pretty sure someone around here can answer that question.

Thanks for letting me know about the Windows server. I don’t know much about servers so that was helpful and will relay that to the client. If anyone knows about IIS, please feel free to let me know before I get back to the client. Thanks!

    from the docs:

    Server requirements

WordPress server requirements for versions prior to 2.0:

    * PHP version 4.1 or greater
    * MySQL version 3.23.23 or greater

WordPress server requirements for version 2.0:

    * PHP version 4.2 or greater
    * MySQL version 3.23.23 or greater
    * (Optional) Apache mod_rewrite module (for clean URIs known as Permalinks)

Isnt that clear? (rhetorical question) Those are the requirements. It follows since it does not say APACHE, that APACHE is not a requirement.

    Recommended setup

We recommend Apache and Linux as the most robust platforms for running WordPress, but …

any server that supports PHP and MySQL will do. If your host doesn’t support the above, including mod_rewrite, you will probably be better off switching to another hosting provider, because there are a lot that do.

Its going to be a tough road for you and your client, if you cannot interpret that enough to answer your own question.
