• I want nothing to do with Google. I don’t want to interact with the organisation at all. Hence I have rules on my machine to prevent connections, when activated I can’t access WP Admin on any sites. After entering user credentials the page just stays white with nothing loaded, until/unless I authorise connections to google servers (fonts and google apis).

Why is this? Can I get around it? Can I use WordPress without feeding the monolithic data harvesting beast (at best) that is Google in 2023?

  • I’m not aware that WordPress core (keyword here: CORE, and not a 3rd-party plugin or theme you installed) makes any calls to Google.

And I’m able to access my local WordPress site’s dashboard with no internet connection at all, and I don’t see any attempts to call Google.

Is this a new install with ZERO plugins activated and the default Twenty Twenty-Three theme active? If not, I’ll recommend you disable ALL (really, ALL) your plugins and switch to the default 2023 theme and test this.

I suspect one or more of the 3rd-party addons you may have installed may be making these requests, though I’m open to being proved otherwise.

Thanks, that’s an interesting reply. I am pretty sure its not plugin based, the browser will literally not budge from the login screen to the dashboard screen after logging in, unless I allow those Google connections. I know that doesn’t prove it can’t be a plugin, but I think it’s extremely unlikely.

The site is built with Oxygen Builder (a plugin / page/theme builder). I will ask their devs about it too thanks.

Might take 30 seconds tops to TEST this — to know for sure what’s going on — rather than continuing to work with assumptions.
