I had been messing around with manually trying to apply HTML5 shiv, including adding some code to the functions.php in the child theme … with no luck

Using this plugin instead, suddenly the site I was working on looked the way I intended on IE7 … not in use much I know these days, but the client had pointed out that it wasn’t working properly, so now I am happy (and paid!)
