Does this still work?

I am worried since there is no update from this developer for a long time. Does this plug-in work as expected. Is there a way to dynamically find out the subscribed categories and display a list (or excerpts) of posts of only those categories? Someone mentioned that e-mails are being sent even after the plug-in is deactivated. Is anyone else facing such issues? Are there any alternate plug-ins available to provide this feature?
