Does requiring approval for product review only apply to 1st time?

    Hi,

    I’m testing out the product review feature in WooCommerce and it seems that only the 1st review by any given user required approval. Subsequent reviews by the same test user were posted immediately.

    Is this the normal behavior? Or is there a way to require that any review always require approval.

    Hi @lychee128,

    You can toggle the default review settings from WP Admin → WooCommerce → Settings → Products → General → Reviews. From what you are saying, it sounds like you have unchecked the Reviews can only be left by “verified owners” box, is that correct?

    The WooCommerce reviews piggybacks on the Comments settings built into WordPress. You can edit those settings from WP Admin → Settings → Discussion, and ensure the Comment must be manually approved box is checked, as seen here:

    Thanks for your response.

    I actually have the Discussion settings set up just as in your image:

    – Comment must be manually approved (checked)
    – Comment author must have a previously approved comment (unchecked)

    In addition, in the WooCommerce -> Settings -> Products section, I have all 3 options checked:

    – Enable product reviews
    – Show verified owner label on reviews
    – Reviews can only be left by “verified owners”

    WooCommerce is in fact making sure that only a verified owner can leave a comment, and requiring the first comment to be approved. However, all subsequent comments seem to automatically post (as long as the user is logged in and the product was purchased).

    Is there another setting somewhere that I’m overlooking?

    Also, I just checked… in the admin page, I do see that my new comments are listed as “pending” but they still seem to automatically post.

    Found the problem… I’m using a plug-in (to display stars of the review) that seems to override the standard Woocommerce permissions. For some reason, the initial review by a customer adheres to my WooCommerce settings but subsequent reviews are automatically posted.

    Once I deactivate the plug-in, all reviews require approval before being posted (as expected).
