    Hi All,
There seems to be no end to the probs I’m having here.

Does portfolio shortcode not actually work on a ‘Portfolio Page Template’ page which is elected as the static homepage?

It doesn’t seem to matter what I do with the shortcode on my page, it has no effect at all on the homepage thumbnail types, order, and columns.

The homepage also ignores the chronology of the projects displayed, but shows the most recently created proects.

The shortcode does work, however, on all other site ‘Pages’ which are not using the ‘Potfolio Page Template’.

    Surely I’m missing something?

    `[portfolio display_tags=false include_type=animation-design,editorial-illustration,fine-art,games-art,personal-artwork,sequential-art,story-app-art columns=4 showposts=12 orderby=rand]’

    Thanks,
    John

The Portfolio page template dynamically generates, so no, you cannot use the Portfolio Shortcode on that page. If you wish to use the shortcode, it will have to be inserted on a template other than the Portfolio Page Template, perhaps a full-width page template.

Oh heck. Its taking a long time for me to discover these aspects of this content type.

I must make up a cheat-sheet or whatever and post it here so others who might struggle like me will know these things from the outset.

So, am I getting this right?:

If you want a specific page to display in the homepage with the thumbnail images you do not need the Portfolio Page Template applied to it. In fact it’s possibly not a good idea to do so, because you cannot use shortcode in that page to determine how and what displays and in what order, and you cannot have accompanying text displayed. All you can do—I think—is instruct the system to display a particular shape and number of thumbnails on the homepage.

Makes me wonder what the point of the Portfolio Page Template is apart from it automatically generating a standard /portfolio page over which which you have limited control.

Perhaps it’s for people who don’t want to learn how to use shortcodes?

I think that changing dates on your project posts to change the order of display of thumbnails in pages using the Portfolio Page Template doesn’t actually change anything. I’m pretty sure that I tried this to no effect.

OK, the downside of not using the Portfolio Page Template on the Page that will serve as a static homepage… is that the slider doesn’t display anymore.

    Arggh.

Dates do indeed determine which posts show on the homepage using the Portfolio Page Template.

The Portfolio Shortcode is really meant to allow users to add portfolios to themes that do not support the full Jetpack Portfolio, but also to give users a bit more control on what shows and doesn’t show. Some users want a lot of control, and some just want their Projects to show in a grid and aren’t that concerned with what shows, and what order they show in.

Yeah, with a static front page instead of the Portfolio Template Home page, the slider does not display. Not sure what to suggest on that.

For a static front page, you could try some of the Header Image Slider plugins. I’ve not used any of them in a long while, so I don’t have any personal recommendations, and some may not work well with Sketch. About all you can do is try and see.

    Yes, I’d wondered about a slider plug-in.

    I was pleased that i wasn’t having to use a 3rd party plug-in, but maybe…

    I’m using ‘Smart Slider’ now.
    So far, so good ??
