Does not work for images inserted from link

Hi, I’m using the WP function “insert media” -> “insert from web address” to add pics to my posts. But adding images to the post by using this option the plugin does not work, pics are not set as thumbnail. Is this normal? I mean under the FAQ I found this:
“This plugin uses only standard WordPress functions to set the featured image.”
But the function I’m using is standard I guess…?
