I tried to get akismet API key, but denies to log in with woprdpress.com account, because site where I want to use it has no connection with it (it’s an independent wordpress multisite installation), but then it showed me, that I have to use wordpress.com account. WTF? Why does it looks like it was giving me an option but then refused when I choose “the wrong” answer?

Does akismet works with independent wordpress sites? Can I use it without wordpress.com account?

You do need a WordPress.com account in order to get an Akismet API key. Accounts are free, and you do not need to use WordPress.com itself for blogging.

    OK, thanks for clarifying this.

However plugin shouldn’t present us a choice where there is none, otherwise it suggests as if there was a way to set it without that account. That’s confusing. Just my two cents ;).
