Do footer widgets work?

I have tried to put an image and text in the footer using image widget, but it’s not showing. When I go to live preview, I get a message saying the page doesn’t display widgets, for each page . However I have managed to activate the sidebar and have put widgets in that. Do the footer widgets work on this theme and how can I get them to work? I want to put a section of text and/or image underneath the main section of text, but in a sepearate section. Please can anyone assist?
