• If you want your entire website to get bloated, use this plugin.

My website has 62 plugins, all optimized well, and the frontend of my website loads in 0.88 seconds with 25MB of RAM. When I downloaded Media Cloud onto my server. 2.34 second load time, 45MB of RAM.

    Before: 0.88s / 25MB RAM
    After: 2.34s / 45MB RAM

    165% increase in load time
    80% increase in RAM

They also want $0.08 per GB for their CDN, which is OUTRAGEOUS.
    {competitor ads removed}

They want $3 / 1000 images optimized. Imagify is unlimited for $9.99 a month but they also give you 20MB per month which is more than anyone really needs unless you do serious development.

I don’t really care about the image thing, my biggest gripe with them is that they want $0.05 PER MINUTE OF ENCODED VIDEO!!!

You do not understand the disgusting markup on that. Amazon charges you about $0.05 per MINUTE of their services, and it only takes about 1 second to do 1 minute on their network, so 60 minutes = $0.05, and even THAT is a rip-off.

You know you can upload to YouTube and get all the sizes you need and they will be about half the size and better quality than what MUX can offer?

With the proper configurations, a server that can encode 4 simultaneous videos will cost about $0.80 an hour on Amazon.

1 (one) minute video will take the computer approx. 1 second to encode. Give 5 seconds for various sizes. You can do 4 at a time. That’s 4 minutes of video per second.

60 seconds x 4 videos = 240 minutes of converted video per minute
240 video minutes x 60 minutes = 14,400 minutes of videos encoded per hour.
14,400 video minutes x 24 hours = 345,600 minutes of videos encoded per day
345,600 video minutes x 30 = 10,368,000 minutes of videos encoded per month

How much does that server cost per month? $720 per month (it would be far more beneficial to rent a server. You can get three servers that are more powerful than the AWS ones on OVH for that price per month)

    10,368,000 minutes x $0.05 / 5 different sizes per encoded minute = $103,680 in revenue.

$103,680 for SERVICES that cost $720 (or $240 if they’re smart)

That’s how INSANELY overpriced MUX is. Encoding videos IS AN EASY JOB. I worked on a social network for 5 months. Could you imagine if 15,000 minutes of video per day were encoded on their network? It would cost $750 a day, $22,500 a month, $273,750 a YEAR! I got a VPS and installed FFMPEG on the server, and the server that costs $20 a month handles all of the encoding. DO NOT PAY FOR OVERPRICED STUFF LIKE THIS. IT ISN’T OKAY. THIS IS PREDATORY!!

I installed this on a quick site I’m doing for a friend that wanted an interactive user blog with revisions and public edits. But I am taking the time out of my busy day to warn you not to use it!!!

  • Thanks for the insightful review with great details. Best of all, you already did all the math for us.

    (@interfacelab)

Except the math isn’t correct nor is the review even remotely fair or accurate as it’s quoting prices for external services that we aren’t affiliated with in any way. In fact, the author of the review tells you to use StackPath and avoid Media Cloud, but that doesn’t make any sense because you can use StackPath with Media Cloud and alot of our users do. In fact, StackPath has a tutorial on their own site on how to use their service with Media Cloud.

We *don’t* provide cloud storage services, we only provide a means to use the ones you want with WordPress.

So saying that all of this costs this or that, that depends on who you choose to use. It could be Amazon, it could be Google, or it could be StackPath which the poster mentions that you should use.

Again, he mentions Imgix pricing as though it were our pricing. If you don’t want to use Imgix, then don’t use Imgix. It’s optional. We simply give you a way to use Imgix if that’s what you choose.

And it’s the same story with Mux. If you don’t want to use Mux, don’t use Mux. Also, in defense of Mux, the math here isn’t remotely accurate but that’s an issue you need to address with them. This plugin simply enables you to use them with WordPress if that’s what you choose.

We don’t make any money from any of these services, we aren’t affiliates for any of them. Use whatever service you want with Media Cloud. You can even setup your own free cloud storage on your own servers with Minio and use that if you are so inclined.
