I purchased hosting from Siteground for my WP blog, but I am unable to download the “free” SG plug-in unless I upgrade to a business account? I thought by getting SG I could avoid that?

Thanks in advance for any insight and suggestions.

    Hello there @rachelle83,

You can go to your Site Tools, click on WordPress->Migrator. From there choose the domain you want and click on Generate. This will generate a unique token. Copy it.

Go to the site you wish to transfer, download the plugin, install it and paste the unique generation token, and hit transfer. The plugin is free and can be downloaded via your WordPress Dashboard from Plugins->Add New or you can download it from the plugin page.

This will start the transfer to your new hosting account.

    Kind regards,
    Stoyan

Thank you! I understand the steps I’m supposed to be able to follow, unfortunately I’m getting hung up at the INSTALL part. I’ve downloaded the siteground-migrator .zip file and it’s in the download folder on my hard drive. From there, I’m unsure what to do.

The free plug-in download button via the plug-in section of the WordPress admin dashboard for my blog is grayed out and unable to be clicked. It states I must upgrade from a free WordPress account to a business account in order to download plug-ins. Is this necessary? I was hoping to avoid this step with SiteGround hosting.

    Thank you,
    Rachelle

Ok, I’ve finally figured out how to “initiate transfer” using the migration token. Hooray! However, now I get an error over and over and over again – it says the migration failed and I need to proceed with a valid token.

I’ve unlocked my domain and somehow, someway paid $16 to transfer it to SG (can you tell I don’t know what I’m doing?)…no clue if this paid transfer was necessary, but I’m committed now.

Thanks for any advice you can send my way!

    Hey there @rachelle83,

Could you provide your site url, so we can check it out? Also are there any errors present in the migrator log, located at wp-content folder.

    Kind regards,
    Stoyan

I wish I knew how to find the wp-content folder.

My domain has been transferred to siteground by SG tech support. I have updated the DNS to SG nameservers. Why doesn’t my domain (www.thebookscover.com) look like it is supposed to (www.thebookscover.wordpress.com)? I thought having SG do the transfer was going to fix this.

    Thanks,
    Rachelle

    Hey @rachelle83,

I am afraid that a transfer from WordPress.com is not possible. If you want to migrate from WordPress.com, please check the Guided Transfer service they offer.

    Kind regards,
    Stoyan

    Hi Rachelle,

Yes, you need the business plan on wordpress in order to use plugins.

To find wp-folder you need to download filezilla for example, which is an FTP client.

in filezilla you need to click on (in the left corner) File>Site manager
It opens a window where you have to click on New site.
You have to fill out the Host, Port, User, and Password which you can find on wordpress if you click on Settings>Hosting configuration under the “SFTP credentials”
Make sure in filezilla you set Protocol to “SFTP” and Logon type:”normal”
then you click connect. But you can see the exact steps in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-MvV8QZo_A

However I still not figured out the whole migration-permission issue either, but I hope I could help.
