• hi
im wanting to move my blog from a sub to the root directory, whilst keeping my wordpress installation files in the sub directory. im following a tutorial in wordpress codex. it says i need to start by moving my index.php and .htaccess files from the sub to the root.

however, my problem is that i never had a .htaccess file from the start and still don’t. everything in my blog is functioning fine in the sub and i have enabled permalinks. i still didnt generate a .htaccess file.

should i go ahead and create one or can i move my blog without having a .htaccess file?
    regards

Are you sure you don’t have an .htaccess? Or is it hidden? If you don’t have one….you don’t need one. But with pretty permalinks set up…I thought you needed one? (are you on windows or linux hosting?)

im on linux hosting. ive checked EVERYWHERE, even with hidden file on FTP. its not there. i tried my hosts and they said its an apache server running linux. i only activated my pretty permalinks yesterday, but still no .htaccess file.

my hosts tell me i can upload my ‘wordpress script’ which will generate one. or i can make one myself. trouble is i can make one myself with the wordpress rule and set it to the correct permissions but WHY WOULDNT I HAVE THIS FILE?

MY HOST JUST SENT ME THIS MSG:

I have consulted with our administrators on the matter, and it seems that the recent versions of the WordPress script do not require .htaccess file, and the permalinks are actually working with it and that is why .htaccess files are no longer included in the installation of the script. Of course, if you wish, you can at any time create a .htaccess file and enter additional rules in it, but the default permalinks no longer depend on that file.
If you wish, you can find a .htaccess file from older WordPress versions at their support forum

is this true, guys? i cant believe nobody in the wordpress support forums told me this. seems my web hosts know more about wordpress than us lot put together(!)

hmm….it should be in your WP directory….well….just go ahead with the move I would say….

If you haven’t already done the move….you could switch your permalinks back to default then move, then reset them….but I think you’ll be fine either way
