• Hi,

I never had a self-hosted website so I have some very basic questions.

I want to buy webspace with a one-click WordPress installation, buy a theme via Themforest and probably some stuff like woocommerce as well as a few seo and security plugins and be done with it.
After that I just want to create portfolios and blog articles.

Do I need an FTP client? What is the best way to manage portfolio pictures (media folder) because I need folders to have an better overview about my files here to include in articles.

    Thanks for helping

  • Hey,
if you use a one-click solution you don’t need a FTP client, but eventually to fix bugs, it’s recomended to have one.

And you shouldn’t and can’t manage images in the media folders (on FTP). Because WordPress handles the uploaded media files, create entries in database and create the right sizes for your theme.
If you upload images via FTP, you can’t use them in your WordPress theme.

    Hi Michael,

thank you. So if I want to manage media files, I need a plugin that can create folders/ordering?

Ok, so I will get a FTP client for special tasks, but I’m happy if I don’t need it much. I oused one years ago and I kinda hated using it ??

For managing media files, the big questin is how you want to manage them.

If you’re only trying to manage the images to be per-post (or page, product, etc), you don’t need any sort of file manager plugin. Any time you upload an image or other file using the ‘Add Media’ butotn on the post/pag/etc editing page that file is “attached” to teh post that it’s uploaded to, and you can see that in the gallery pop-up with the drop downs.
