Do I have to use a custom post type?

    I would like to create content with some text, links, and images like an author box which could be inserted on every page with a shortcode. This would allow me to make changes on just one page and automatically update all other pages.

    Can I create the content on a regular page or post instead of a custom post type?

    Yep, any post type works (including built in Posts and Pages).
