• I am completely new to PHP, and it says to get the database name, but I have no idea what it is. I know I have 10 MySQL databases or something (atleast, that’s what the FAQ on the site tell me), but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. It says I can’t do anything until I know that name. Its a free Hostrocket account. Will WordPress simply not work on this account? I have no idea what to do! Thanks for any help.

  • I don’t see any information about a free hosting account on hostrocket.com…

what i do see, here: https://www.hostrocket.com/products/scripts.htm is that they’ll install WP 1.2.1 for you (it’s included in the hosting package) – however i SURELY wouldn’t recommend using that version… the most recent release is 2.0.2 and is far superior in terms of security and usability.

i’m not aware of any “free hosting” that offers up MySQL databases… are you sure that’s what you have? you’re not paying that $7.95 a month or whatever?

I have a free account, trust me. https://www.hostrocket.com/free

It has MySQL, I’m trying to set up an account, but its just not working…

    https://faq.hostrocket.com/index.php?page=index_v2&id=46&c=15

hostrocket would be a better place to ask if you can or can’t do this… that’s the FAQ about PHP and MySQL for hostrocket…

i still find it hard to believe a free host would give away MySQL databases, but okay…

Wait a sec… alright, nevermind, it just told me the MySQLs wouldn’t work on free ones, even though I thought I was trying to set one up…

Then I guess my question would be if I could set up a database on another host? I have a friend who would be able to, but can I set up a database for my account on their paid account if they support MySQL databases?

Hosts very rarely allow mysql databases to be operated from anywhere else.

    Thought about https://www.wordpress.com?

Yes, but I want to be able to do the whole customizing theme thing. Can I do that with worpress.com?

No, you can’t. You can only choose from the themes offered by wp.com.
To enjoy all the features and the freedom to customize everything you’ll need your own hosted WP install. Actually, there are some free hosts offering MySQL but don’t ask which one: I have never really been interested in it. Though I remember guiding a user through the install process on such a host. Your best bet – google for it.

not for nothing but godaddy has a $3.95/month hosting plan… and it works with WP if you choose the “hosting w/PHP” option… about as close to “free” and “fully customizable” as you can get

Yeah, I was going to do be doing that once my free site at the moment gets enough money from G. Adsense to pay for it. If a plan has MySQL databases, that basically means it supports PHP, right?
