• Hello,

I want to insert a do follow link to an external page in my blog. I want the page to open in a new tab so I selected that option in the editor. However, the owner of the page I’m linking to is telling me the link is no-follow.

So I go to the post editor and check the link

And then I open the page in the browser, click on “inspect”

I don’t get it, why does the link appear differently in the editor and the inspect function in the browser? What do I have to do to make it do-follow? I thought that all external links were do-follow by default, but it doesn’t appear that way?

    ANy help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • First, I don’t get what you mean by “this” in your second and third paragraphs: it seems something is missing in the post.

    That said…

I just installed a FRESH WordPress sandbox site: no plugin and just the default Twenty Twenty theme.

I edited the default “Hello World” post in the default editor (not classic editor plugin or 3rd-party page builder) and added two links: one with “Open in new tab” unchecked and the other checked.

None of the two links had “nofollow” attribute added, as you can see below. So it appears what you’re experiencing is not the default WordPress behaviour, and that something on your site is adding this attribute to your outbound links.

    Hey @gappiah,

There seems to be a mistake. My post does not contain “this” in the second or third paragraphs (“First, I don’t get what you mean by “this” in your second and third paragraphs: it seems something is missing in the post.”).

“So it appears what you’re experiencing is not the default WordPress behaviour, and that something on your site is adding this attribute to your outbound links.”

That’s precisely what I was hoping someone could give me a hand with…

    Thanks

When you indicate that an external link should open in a new tab/new windows, then for security reasons rel="noreferrer noopener" will be added to the link. But “nofollow” is not added in posts/pages by standard WordPress functionality. It’s possible that your theme or some plugin is doing this. Since you don’t see this in the editor, then I’d guess that this happens on-the-fly when a page is created, something is adding this parameter via filtering the page content just before it’s delivered to the visitor.

Thank. Yes, this appears to be the case, but what can be causing this? It’s really annoying since I can’t put do-follow links in my posts, with the evident SEO limitations this brings. I’m using Voice theme.

If anything occurs to you of what might be causing this, I’d appreciate your contact.I have included links to screenshots of editor and browser with inspect function.

    Thanks,

    Dirk
