I am attempting to verify the domain on WP Encryption v5.3.15, but it fails at the “Verify DNS Challenge” The DNS setting has been setup for over 24 hours and tests perfectly fine at the network level for both:

    https://dnschecker.org/#TXT/_acme-challenge.betsybags.com
    https://dnschecker.org/#TXT/_acme-challenge.www.betsybags.com
(I added entries for both WWW and non www to try to troubleshoot the problem just in case things are getting confused)

The host is Amazon Lightsail WP Multisite. When you click on the button to validate, the error message returned is: “Something went wrong! Please try again. I have tried this on another domain name on Lightsail Multisite as the same result occurs.

Does this plugin have problems with Amazon’s Nultisite version of WordPress? This is Bitnami’s version of WP multisite and is quite complex, so using the file authentication method in a subfolder is not an option. Am I the first person to test on this host?

    Please advise

  • I can’t answer your plugin question but if you really have a multisite install then all the sites within the multisite will refer to the same root directory. There’s only one actual WordPress install on a multisite.

I am very familiar with the Bitnami Multisite package and that is the way it is done with Bitnami or any other multisite.

Sometimes, someone will call a server instance with several installs of WordPress a multisite… Those are actually add-on domains or subdomains added to the host!

I also noticed you have a very broken DNS entry for _acme-challenge.www.betsybags.com which seems to show the required text entry? But there aren’t any other records there like the A record, a Cname, or an SOA and I really expected that TXT record to be in betsybags.com DNS record along with a Cname for the ‘www’ and the rest of what is there right now for that domain already.

From the way that looks, I don’t think either WordPress or that plugin is your problem.

Hope this helps you in some way.

Let us know if we can help you further and sometimes the web host may be a good resource for help with situations like this one.

    Hi Nash

    Thanks you for your response.

Yes its the classic Bitnami Multisite WP package – IE one install of WP with multiple sites. I think that means that I cannot install a single file verification for WP Encryption, so a DNS TXT entry is the only solution to verify.

For WP Encryption plugin, only one TXT DNS entry is required, so I think what I have is OK. I don’t think they need an A record, a CNAME, or an SOA for this entry.

Generally, I just added an ALIAS to push non-WWW traffic to WWW, but I don’t think that’s the issue with WP Encryption. Forgetting _acme-challenge.www.betsybags.com for a moment, what other DNS issues do you see? BTW WordPress is working fine and all other plugins are 100%

Okay, I was just trying to help with what I do know.

Do feel free to ask if you need anything else and maybe the plugin’s author can help.

Just for <Grins> I’d try adding that file from the plugin suggestion and/or add that text entry to the root domain’s DNS. Up to you though!

I tried adding the text entry to the root domain, but no luck either.

Is there somewhere I can add the single verification file to only appear in betsybags.com? I don’t want it appearing in all the sites on WP Multisite.

@nytix We do have an override method built into the plugin when verification button fail to validate locally. Please login to your wp-admin and open below link, if you have correctly added the DNS records, then everything will succeed and your SSL certificate will be generated instantly.

That link pushes it a bit further, but still to no avail.
Does this plugin even work with WP Multisite?
    See the error log below:

@nytix You seem to have incorrect values in TXT records!. Also, Please make sure you are not adding the double quotes in value of TXT record. Then re-try above wpleauto link

Value for TXT record of _acme-challenge.betsybags.com should be uL4sEvFBMNQh3ZEQLF0PKDbWZZ3HMmmtwy2jv8FNThE

Value for TXT record of _acme-challenge.www.betsybags.com should be 9MhPwJCW0MMPpHYquEPte7X_CL1H_A6_LWvngjpL7Ao

DNS had not updated when you checked. It is good now.

Upon clicking the verify link, it turns briefly to “verified” then switches back to “verify DNS challenges”

It now allows me to download the certs, but this brings up a bigger question. I am now thinking that you cannot have a separate SSL cert for each site under WordPress Multisite. Is that your understanding? IE Only the root domain can have the cert and all the subsites have to use that on WP Multisite?

So I am not sure why your plugin is encouraging this, as its not possible under Multisite?
