    The distance it shows in the search results is based on the shortest distance between the start point and the store ( a straight line ). There is a formula to calculate the distance between two set of coordinates, and that is what is done here.

    But once you click on the directions link, then the Google Maps API looks at the available roads and find the quickest route for you to drive, and of course this isn’t a straight line.

    That’s why there is a difference between the distance in the search results and the driving directions. As far as I know all store locators work like this.
