• How could I allow logged in users to “follow” categories as well as other users of their choosing and populate their homepage feed with recent posts only from those selected? I know they could click on the link each time to view the category archive but that isn’t what we want.
It should work like twitter or tumblr but include categories as well as “following” individual users.

As an example, imagine a recipe blog with multiple authors. A logged in user should have the option to select certain categories of recipes that they want to see posts from when they are logged in, for example vegetarian and vegan recipes. They obviously wouldn’t want to see the latest posts from the meat categories.
In addition, they may have a favorite author that they would like to follow and see their recipes in their “feed”.
Is any of this possible with wordpress?
    Thanks
    Tony

contentiskey, thanks for your response. No it will be just standard author roles for all users (unless a membership plugin will allow me to do this?)

We would be open to using premium plugins if it gives us exactly what we need.

    Thanks

a membership plugin normally offers some sort of content restriction/selection
some membership plugins are free, some are premium/paid
i have used paidmembershipspro to vary the content for different visitors(members) which can be used for free membership level too.

    chrislema.com has a membership overview/comparison

another option might be to customize the permissions of the standard user roles but that would not be my first choice.
