Displaying current events in sidebar, using custom fields and excerpts

Hi There,
I’m designing a movie blog and I want to have a box in the sidebar that has links to my reviews of movie’s that are being released ‘this week’. For example, a review for a film coming out on Friday should show up in the box from the preceeding Monday to the following Sunday.

I tried using Event Calendar to implement this as I wanted to be able to post the reviews whenever I liked to the main blog but only have them show up in the box for the week of release.

The problem I have with this is that you cannot set it to show custom fields when listing events (I want the links to be just the names of the movies and not necessarily the names of my posts). I also want to have a picture from the top review show above the list. I would usually use the excerpt function for this but again it isn’t supported by Event Calender.

My sidebar box should look like this:

RELEASED THIS WEEK
[Photo of Movie 1]
Movie 1 Title [links to Movie 1 review]
Movie 2 Title [links to Movie 1 review]
Movie 3 Title [links to Movie 1 review]
Movie 4 Title [links to Movie 1 review]

Any idea how I could implement this?
