Displaying Avatars for followers

I looked at a couple links but did not find anything specific to my request that wasn’t four years old. My blog shows the avatars of those who comment, but does not display those for people who are following my blogs. How can I make that happen? I went trough the steps using the setting menu and it does have display avatar checked but I suspect that is for mine and/or those who comment. But I’d like to have those for followers.
