Display text and images in different divs

Hi there,

Ive looked around the forums and the codex but cant quite get a definitive method of achieving what i need.

Im still a noob, so if you could please go into detail with your response id really appreciate it.

I need the text and images to display in separate areas of the page for posts. The idea is to have a featured image on index.php but when you view the post, or indeed the category, the text is all in a content div to the right, and the images are displayed in a div to the left.

Can anyone please help me with this?
Even if you could point me in the direction of an explanation rather than typing it out yourself, id really appreciate it.
