Display Subpages on Category Archive

Is this possible for the subpages to display on a Category Archive page? Using the is_category() conditional tag inside the widget logic does not seem to work. Or will it only display on pages in general? When I display this on a page under the same menu item that is a page it pulls the category names but I can’t display that same piece on the Category Archive. Why is that?
