I love the featured image option in Apostrophe, and have had no problem using it on regular posts. As you can see on lonesomeroadreview.com, I use an image of the album cover for the album being reviewed—so the featured images are all square.

But when I feature a POST so that it will stand out, the featured image does increase in size, but it seems to be rectangular and cuts off the to and bottom of the picture of the CD covers.

Help please? Keep in mind that I am a beginner.

The blog I need help with is lonesomeroadreview.com.

Apostrophe recommends a featured image on the featured post that’s at least 930px wide by 450px high, but your image for Joy of Living is only 600px wide.

Could you try uploading a larger image and see if that works better?

Thanks for the suggestion. I left the “Joy of Living” post as it was, but the newest one, “Muscle Shoals Recordings,” has an image that’s 1024 x 1024.

The Muscle Shoals image looks good, right? Could you try uploading one that meets the minimum recommended size for Joy of Living to see if that gives you the right proportions for the featured image on the homepage?

No, the Muscle Shoals featured image on lonesomeroadreview.com is also cut—if you click into the story and scroll down, you’ll see the full CD cover.

The basic problem is that the featured image settings takes the square CD covers, regardless of file size, and shoves it into a rectangular space.

This is how Apostrophe was designed, though – featured images on featured posts are rectangular, as you can see on the demo:

If you don’t want a rectangular image, you can make the post not featured and that should return the featured image to a square aspect ratio. Let me know if that does the trick.

There’s no way to change the rectangular setting to a square one?

I’d like to be able to highlight a post without cutting off the top and bottom of the corresponding image?

No, Apostrophe is designed so that featured posts take up the horizontal space of two columns, while keeping their height the same as non-featured posts. That means the shape needs to be a rectangle, and not a square.

    @aaronkeith, may I make a suggestion?

In practice, you are not going to find a wordpress theme that is designed with square aspect ratio featured images in mind (unless you create it yourself). But you can fit your square CD images into the required format by some fairly easy manipulation in Photoshop or other favourite graphics app. Here’s how :

    1. open the CD image up in P’shop and resize to 450 px square.
    2. in a new window create a new image with canvas size 930px x 450px, and transparent background.
    3. copy the resized image and paste into the new window, aligning in the centre (this is easy on the screen).
    4. now save as web image in png format (if you want to retain transparency) or jpg (if you don’t care).

Now all your featured images will appear complete in square format with 240px of margin on either side. This should look better than auto cropping the top & bottom from a square.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers
    Mark
