Display order?

If no order is specified in the Book Order field, how are the books organized? When I set this up on my own site, the books displayed in the order of posting date (which I changed manually to reflect the publication date of the books). But when I implemented this on a site I run for an author collective, the books display in some random order. It’s not by date, author, title, or any sort of system that I can tell.
