• I’m not sure where I went wrong here… I noticed that all of a sudden my display name reverted to my full name instead of using my Username and when I tried to go into my profile settings to manually change my display name with the drop down box, I clicked save and nothing changed.

Unfortunately I deactivated the plugin before reading I should make a backup, now I think it has caused a few problems with my current members, as I tried reactivating and now I can’t use the @ tag anymore.

Is there anyway I can fix whatever may have been done from deactivating?

And further, is there a way to “unlock” the display name while using your plugin?

Firstly, which version of the plugin are you running?

The plugin shouldn’t be affecting the @mentions… that sounds like a separate issue.

This plugin hides the BuddyPress “full name” field, but doesn’t otherwise interfere with what’s used to display names around the site. IIRC, BuddyPress will use the “full name” field rather than the WordPress “display name” setting, so you may need to look into why that’s happening.

Lastly, yes, you can filter the “name” output on your site to make it whatever you want it to be.

    Version Version 0.6.1

And yes, the @mentions may be messed up by a separate issue.

But my main issue is the fact that, when I go to My Profile under the Admin section….

I go to the drop-down box that says “Display name publicly as”

With your plugin: This drop down box will not change, changes to this will not save.

Without your plugin: I can select from 3-4 options and it will save.

Thanks for the report. I will see if I can replicate the issue and, if so, will fix.

Hey Christian, I noticed this bug when I upgraded to 0.6 as well. I think the real problem is that even if you revert to 0.5.3 or upgrade to 0.6.1 something is left in the database that is conflicting with the ‘display name’ and I wish I could give you some guidance as to what that might be. For me the only thing that cleaned up my issues was to revert to my backup.

To noMATTERdesign and anyone who will listen! Never, never, never upgrade any plugin no matter how big or small you might think it is without a backup.

I use Vaultpress and wpengine on all of my sites. If you do this you will never have any regrets and you might even be able to help the plugin authors that support your sites for free find and resolve the problems by providing them with vital feedback.

Christian is awesome but he has to feed his family too. It might take time but I know he’ll be able to resolve this but if you can’t go back to an earlier version or give him access to your site there may not be much he can do for your specific issue.

Good luck, this is a great plugin and vital to how we manage our clients and members. As far as I’m concerned BuddyPress needs to incorporate this into the main plugin and give Christian due credit…

I agree with you 100%… I am a novice at best and gave as much info as possible. I have since fixed my problems with reverting to a back up as well and moved on.

I hope this will get worked in and fixed somehow and yes, this author has done a great job thus far!

@nomatterdesign Glad to hear all’s well with your install. I will look at the Display Name dropdown issue as soon as I am able to reproduce it.

    Cheers, Christian

Ok, so I’ve confirmed the issue here. The problem is that BuddyPress itself does this as well. So the question is whether this plugin should override what BuddyPress does, or whether there ought to be options in BuddyPress to skip this step.
