Good thing I backed it up first!

There appeared a big invasive notification box about a Header update for Sydney so like any other update it shouldn’t completely ruin what was there before, should it?

Well right after updating, my logo image was shrunk down to a tiny size with unreadable text on it, accompanied by the appearance across the center of the header space of a jumbled arrangement of every page name, jammed into the header space with some page names not showing due to not enough room. Tried uploading larger logo images but they kept getting shrunken down, some worse than others though. Nothing in any of the Customize screens had any effect on that problem or the strange menu of jumbled page names and unwanted search icon to the right of them. Many of those Customize functions didn’t work at all, and this Sydney theme already lacked a lot of normal WordPress Customize functions when I started!

There also doesn’t seem to be any Support for non-Pro users, leading me to wonder if this could be a deliberately broken Update designed to force desperate website owners to upgrade (??). Fortunately I’m still building out my site and can pretty easily switch themes, it should just take a day or two to get back to the look I had before and have restored it to. Alternatively I suppose I could spin off a Child theme from my restored backup and try to find plugins to give me back the Customize functions that should have been with Sydney in the first place, but that’s a pretty kludgy solution. At this point I just want to stop seeing those invasive update notifications popping up over and over again on every pageload of certain screens.

    Hi,

Sorry you had issues with the update. You weren’t the only one and for that we do apologise. The first thing you should have done, and we would’ve told you to do if you’d posted in the forum, is clear your browser cache. This solved any issues for most users.

In any event we have now (as of Sydney 1.82) fixed all of the issues in the header update and will be rolling out more improvements to the theme in the coming weeks (next up is the typography settings).

We do provide support to our free users. We are here on the forums every day replying to users. If you’d posted about your issue with the header update we’d have been happy to help you, just as we helped several other users who had similar issues.

As we posted in the forums, if you’d like to revert back to the old header, follow these steps:

Visit this link: yoursite[DOT]com/wp-admin/options.php, then find the sydney-update-header line using your web browser’s finder menu (CTRL+F). Change the value to 0 and update. Here is your visual guide for this.

If you think there are missing Customizer options in Sydney, please let me know here and I can look into them.

If you use Sydney again and run into a problem, try posting on the forum and we’ll help you out with any issues.
