I’m a newbie at WordPress. I installed the Twenty Ten theme and several plug-ins. But, when I went to make my first post, my line breaks disappeared from the archived version. (I was cutting and pasting from an earlier rtf file I made).

I tried installing Windows Live Writer (I wanted an off-line editor anyway). Being rusty on HTML coding, I used the source code it produced (with the HTML tags) and copied to WordPress’s HTML editor. Then I switched to the visual editor, then back to the HTML editor. What a surprise. The HTML tags (for line breaks and paragraphs) were gone.

I thought it had something to do with the plug-ins I installed. But research on the forum here showed this was a common problem. To make a long story short, I found this website: https://rubayathasan.com/wordpress/plugin/enabling-line-break-in-wordpress/#comment-27261 which explained the problem and gave the solution.

I’m posting this in case it saves someone else all the time I wasted. The solution, in summary, involves installing the “TinyMCE Advanced” plugin and checking a box under the settings panel for the same plugin. The plugin also added a bunch of nice edit commands and seems to work on WordPress version 3.0.4. Cheers.

    Short answer: Don’t switch tabs.

Longer answer: The Visual Editor can (and often will) remove all HTML markup. So, if you use the HTML tab, stick that that and disable the Visual tab.

    Hi Esmi,

You seemed to have sovled this type of problem for many. I hope you can help me. This site careertrend.net was fine as of yesterday. Today all the paragraph breaks are gone from post and also the pages. When you first pull up the site you can see the formatting correct for a few seconds and then it goes away and all the sentences are together with no <p> tags. Thanks in advance.
    Rosam
