Categories for our custom post types “disappear” on a regular basis. They appear selected when editing a post, but disappear from the index pages (i.e., /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=book_recs) in the back-end of the site, although you can filter with categories and the corresponding posts will still show up. I regularly have to bulk edit posts so that their categories return. This affects the front-end of the site, as some categories are meant to be listed (i.e. the “Bookstore Picks” category of our “Book Recs” posts on the page I linked).

There is no pattern to the timing of the disappearances, and seemingly no pattern to which posts/categories are affected.

Any sort of errors available in your hosting panel’s error logs? I have never heard of this type of issue occurring, so I don’t have any sort of answer.

I’m also curious if there’s some sort of custom code being run that may be interferring somehow. If you have a staging site that this is happening on, it’d be interesting to see if it still happens with one of the default themes from WordPress, and only the necessary plugins active.
