Disabling SSL in License Manager

Hello,
Thank you for this incredible plugin!

I am trying to activate a license key without SSL. The Settings checkbox ‘Enable the plugin API routes over insecure HTTP connections‘ is checked, but I still get the error:

I got it working with your solution in this post, but would rather disable SSL from the Settings so I can update License Manager in future versions. Is this feature working correctly? Or is there another way to disable SSL without editing the file?
