Disabling automatic updates via wp-config.php

Is there any way to disable automatic updates via wp-config.php or some other way that doesn’t require me to log in? I am concerned about the hypothetical case where a plugin update causes a problem that prevents me from logging in… because if I would then restore my site from a backup, automatic updater would run again immediately and I still wouldn’t be able to log in.
