Thanks for the reply but JavaScript is not a real solution (much less jQuery for such a simple fix!). It would just be a superficial fix without much substance. Ideally I’d like a real HTML solution which I imagine shouldn’t be the hardest thing to code.

this first_as_label worked perfectly for me.
