Disable Pinging for Edits?

While pinging services is a great feature that allows the blog posts to get indexed very quickly, one of major drawbacks of it was that it pings each time there is an edit to the post, virtually sending same URL pings over and over. This could result in having the site labelled as “spammer” and getting an otherwise legitimate site banned.

Has this been looked at or is it being considered? It would be nice if pings were only sent when a new post is made, not when edits to it are done.
