Disable Attribute Archives permanently, forever, and completely

On the product page, whenever I add Attributes, they show up as links.
If I go into Products -> Attributes, and uncheck the “Enable archives” checkbox, it seems to work for a while, but after some updates/changes/product imports (or seemingly damn near anything that has to do with products or categories), the archive links show up again.

Is there any way to permanently and completely kill the attribute archive links? So they don’t come back. Ever. Under any circumstance.
