I’m using Connections BD for a school site. I have three cateories:
    Administration
    Faculty
    Staff

I do not intend to display all categories in one place. Rather, I plan to use shortcodes to show all Administrators on one page (called “Administration”) and then Faculty and Staff on another (called “Faculty and Staff”)- grouped appropriately.

So it doesn’t seem intuitive to me to create a “Directory Home Page”. What am I missing? Do I have to create a Directory Home Page? What if I don’t? If I do, which page should it be?

    Thanks.

You could create a private page to set as the directory home page or set it to one of the existing pages. It is required because some links will only ever resolve to the directory home page. Such as the “View” links on the Connections : Manage admin page and links rendered with widgets in the Widget Pack. Alternatively, you could just not set one. It is just those links would not function. With you setup, that would not seem to matter.

What I highly suggest you do, create a new page. The name does not matter, but lets call it “Person”. Add the [connections] shortcode to it with no options. Set this page as the directory home page. Now, edit the existing shortcodes to include the home_id shortcode option with the id of the “Person” page. This would be the best way of setting up a multiple page directory.

Hope this answers your question thoroughly!

Thanks for your prompt and thorough response. I’ll play with the plugin more, to better understand the links issues.

Re your suggestion, are you recommending that “Person” page be private?

    Jeff

PS/Edit: Now I see what you mean about the “View” link in the ‘Manage’ admin page. Next I’ll check out the widget pack.

No, not if you setup the directory like I suggest. If you make it private, then all you links will 404 for users not logged in.
