Directory front-end broken with upgrade to WP 5.8.2

    I support a site hosted at GoDaddy which uses your plug-in for the directory of their certified teachers. After a mandatory upgrade of WordPress to version 5.8.2, we lost the front-end display of the directory data, instead it only displays I believe the PHP code:

    [connections str_home_phone=’Phone’ str_home_fax=’Fax’ str_cell_phone=’Cell’ str_work_phone=’Phone’ str_work_fax=’Fax’ str_personal_email=’Email’ str_work_email=’Email’ str_other_addr=’Area:’ str_home_addr=’Area:’]

    I contacted GoDaddy, and other than questioning whether the PHP was too high for the site (even though it worked prior to the upgrade), their only advice was to roll the site back to prior to the upgrade. I’d rather get to the root of the issue, lest we find ourselves in this same situation with a WP upgrade to 5.8.3 and above.

    found a solution for me.
    I had to manually update YOAST on my FTP. So YOAST caused the error for me. Hopefully it will help you too or you also use YOAST

    Your issue seems to be completely different from @fullcoat … regardless, great to hear you found the solution. Connections must be using a Yoast SEO function/object that only exists in newer releases of Yoast SEO. Connections requires Yoast SEO 14.1 (roughly two years old) or newer.

    That is not a PHP error/notice. That is the Connections shortcode. That is how the directory is embedded on a page.

    If you see a shortcode instead of the directory that indicates that either Connections is not installed or not activated, please navigate to the WordPress Plugins admin page. Locate the Connections plugin and activate it.

    If it is not listed on the Plugins admin page, then it needs to be installed. Here’s a link to instructions on how to install it:

    Thanks for your response, Steven. I want to be clear this error has occurred on a site that was successfully running Connections for their directory prior to WP v5.8.2. I looked at the Plug-ins, and while I could see the “Connections cMap template”, I didn’t see the Connections Business Directory (CBD) plug-in at all. Thinking that it might have gotten deleted/corrupted in the elevation to WP 5.8.2, I tried to reinstall CBD, but got the error msg, “Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.”

    Do you have any guidance as to what might be going on, and what I can do to remedy it?

    This is a common WordPress error. Basically, it means the folder for Connections exists and, as a safety measure, WordPress will not allow the installation.

    There are several reasons that this state can exist. The most common is that WordPress failed to install or update a plugin.

    My guess is the web host utilizing some automated tool to apply updates failed to update Connections properly.

    The original plugin folder will need to be deleted to install Connections again.

    Here’s a link to a tutorial that further explains the issue and gives a couple of methods to delete the plugin folder. Please follow the tutorial and delete the connections folder. Your Connections data and settings are safe and will not be lost.
