Different posts_per_page count depending on viewport

Is there a way to provide different posts_per_page values depending on the viewport being utilized? I have a layout that is 3-column on larger monitors, but then becomes 2-column at 1030px. When the layout is 3-column, I want posts_per_page to be 9. When it is 2-column, I want posts_per_page to be 8 or 10 (so that their isn’t a strange orphan). How do I effectively do this?
