Different page links in top and bottom menu

Hi I would like to list pages in my two navigation menus, one at the top of my page and the other at the bototm. The ones at the top should be a completely different set from those at the bottom, which will be less important. How can I program my theme to automatically display links to pages according to the menu I choose (top or bottom)?
