Different Menu and Right column by categories. Is this possible?

    Hello I am new to word press but very much like it so far.

    I am in the process of designing a community blog on a very wide range of categories. I am looking, so far in vain, for a hack or plugin that allows me to change the left menu and the right column at the category level.

    Installing multiple versions of WP is not an option as this is a very diverse and large site. Does anyone have any suggestions?
