Different Font Color for Submenu Selections

Hi, I am trying to change the font color of the submenus. I need the main navigation font color to be one color and the the submenu selections to be a different color (because of the two different menu background colors). However, I am unable to change the submenus even though I have tried every “.main navigation” variable such as “a, li, ul” and it never changes the submenu font color. I was wondering if possibly the customizer was overriding my css changes because there is a “link color” option and maybe it is forcing all the menu and submenu links to be the same color. If this is so then how do i get it to ignore the color setting in the customizer and instead just use the custom css, because the customizer doesn’t make the distinction i need it to.
