Different Categories in different Divs

I’ve been looking around a lot trying to find a solution, but haven’t found anything yet.

I’m working on a site for a church. It has four post categories as of right now: sermons, calendar events, news, and bulletins. On the home page I will have four divs (likely in 2 columns).

Now, rather than have the loop spit out all posts in a line, I want each one of these divs to act as a container for the most recent post in each category. So, for example, the top-left div would contain the most recent post from the sermon category; the top-right div would contain the most recent post from the calendar events category, and so on.
