Differences between free and pro versions ?

The free version allows you to create the galleries based on the featured images of posts or media categories. Here’s what you can do with the free version:

Say you have 9 posts in three categories: “Cupcakes”, “Bread” and “Bagels”. If each post has a featured image you can create a pile gallery that will automatically group the images based on category and display a gallery like you see on the demo page at Pile Gallery.

The free version can also do this with media categories. WordPress doesn’t support adding categories to media but there are plugins which let you do this, like Media Categories. If you add categories to your photos it can organize your images the same wat.

The pro version allows you to construct galleries from any image you like. You can create a pile in the backend, give it a title and add images to it. The user interface is really easy to use and allows for a lot of flexibility when creating your galleries.

The pro version comes with a personal or a developer licence. The personal licence allows you to use the plugin on one domain or sub-domain. The developer licence allows you to use it in as many sites as you like.

This certainly sounds like something I can use for an upcoming site. I want to be able to add photos using the normal WP media uploader, and assign several tags to each photo – portrait, landscape, B&W, etc. (I don’t want to use posts and their featured images).

And then a gallery shortcode would display all photos with the relevant tag. I want to add extra photos monthly, without needing to manually update a gallery or edit shortcodes. Clicking on an image would open a lightbox.

You recommend Media Categories plugin but I see it’s not been updated since Dec-12, so I wonder if any of these plugins would work equally well ? (More recent and better reviews).

I’m not sure it would work this way, here’s why: The gallery is for displaying images that belong to more than one category. The title of each pile would be a specific category, so you would see three piles: “Portrait”, “Landscape”, “B&W”. When you click on any of these, the gallery folds out to show what is underneath. If this is what you need then yes, images are pulled dynamically, so if you upload a new “B&W” photo it will automatically show up.

You will be able to use any plugin which is capable of adding taxonomies. I haven’t tested the ones you mentioned but they should be fine ??

OK, I see what you mean – this won’t work like a filterable portfolio plugin, but rather each category would start off as its own pile. So if I had a page for B&W photos, it would start out with 1 pile (and look rather empty) and then expand on clicking.

So for styling a page, your plugin might be better suited for 30 categories each with 10 photos, rather than 3 categories each with 100 photos.

No worries ?? That’s correct, but I do want to add in functionality to make it even better. This is something I’ll chalk up as a feature request. It might be something we will only add to the pro version. If this is the case we will of course send it to you for free ??
