Difference primary sites/subsites.. and some general info needed

– what is the difference between a primary site and subsites?

… They’re separate sites. So they’re … separate. Nothing complicated there. Primary’s the one you see at domain.com, subsites show up as site.domain.com or domain.com/site

– In my example, I would need ‘sites’ in 4 languages with an identical theme. Is it wise to use the primary site as the site for 1 of those languages and create 3 subsites? Or is it wiser to create 4 subsites?

Depending on my URLs, I’d make 4 subsites, and use the MAIN site as a ‘language switch’ page. If you’re domain mapping (example-fr.com and example-en.com) then it doesn’t matter.

I’ve installed WP in a subfolder. The main site resides in /blog/ and the subsites in /blog/de/, /blog/fr/ etc.

I don’t need (and really don’t want) a language switch page, as I am implementing this in an existing website, where the visitor already has a language (or otherwise it’s determined by the browser’s language setting).

So I guess in that case it’s safe to use the main site as 1 of the 4 language sites?

I think the answer is ‘no’ but I’m not sure what you’re asking. Sites are sites. They’re all equally different, regardless if they’re subsites or a main site ??

Yes but I wouldn’t. ONLY because you’ve got subfolders, and all your posts on domain.com/blog will be domain.com/blog/blog/postname

I’d make domain.com/blog/en and leave the main site alone.
