Difference between registering and subscribing?

    Ok, I’ve only recently started out in blogging, so forgive me if this is a blatantly obvious question to most of you…

    What’s the main difference between registering via the Meta widget, and subscribing via a plugin such as Subscribe2 (which I’ve installed on my blog)?
