  • Hi Cristian,

On the surface, they might appear similar, but they provide very different filtering.

    The demo shows it best.

Here is the Browse Ads page:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-ads/

And here is a Browse Categories page that is filtered to a category:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-categories/4/clothing-accessories/

You can’t remove one of them–as that will break AWPCP. The Browse Categories is designed to take an URL to filter by category. Browse Ads will always give back the main list of ads.

    Does that clear it up?

Thank you for your always important to help!
I’ll show you that even in your site are the same.
    Go here:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-ads/
    and go here:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-categories/

Unfortunately it is a very bad thing for SEO.
A possible solution would be to insert a canonical url.
It can not do with Yoast because otherwise canonical url affects all pages.
Example, if I enter canonical url here:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-categories/
    He works canonical url here:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-categories/4/clothing-accessories/

It is necessary to work only canonical url on a page through functions.php – I do not know code to do this thing.

    Hi Cristian,

While you can enter those URLs on the address bar, they aren’t accessible via links directly (you’d never be taken to /browse-categories WITHOUT something after it!) so this probably isn’t as great a concern as you might think.

Google’s spiders will crawl accessible URLs from links on the site, so I don’t believe you’d get a duplicate content penalty for that. Google’s spiders won’t enter URLs on the address bar, they’ll use what they see in the sitemap. Are you seeing BOTH of these in the sitemap?

We can investigate but this is probably not an emergency.

    I maybe I missed something.
The awpcp plugin takes a page and I have created.
You told me that I can not delete.
(I have tried to take out a long time ago and I broke plugin).
If I have a page, it goes automatically in the sitemap.
    Sitemap is sent to Google.
If I understand well I can exclude from sitemap this page and there are no problems. Correct?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello Dave,
in my site the problem was present because the menu was this direct link to the page with shortcode [AWPCPBROWSEADS].
I thank you because your advice has helped me to understand. Now I have changed things and the link is no longer there it all works well.
I made these changes and please say your opinion.
The page with shortcode “[AWPCPBROWSEADS]” now has a 301 redirect to the page with shortcode “[AWPCPBROWSECATS]”.
    In practice this page:
    https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale/elenco-annunci
    has 301 redirect to this:
    https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale
Everything works, if you want to see a category like work well, try clicking here:
    https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale/elenco-annunci/190/cerco-lavoro-in-lombardia

I ask you now if I write in the sitemap settings (Google XML Sitemaps plugin) not to index this page: https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale/elenco-annunci the risk is that it does not index subcategories?
I ask still you believe that future updates may give awpcp 301 redirect problem to the situation that I have done?

    Hi Cristian,

You can try to exclude the URLs from the Sitemap, but I’m not sure if Google XML Sitemap generator has that kind of setting available.

DO NOT do your 301 redirect suggestion above–this will cause major problems with the plugin (301 redirects should only be done by someone when the migrate site content and have to move old URLs to new ones. That’s not what you’re doing here and you’ll seriously break things if you do that)

I can’t say if your suggestion will fix this, since it needs to be addressed in a more basic way (and we haven’t tested to see if this is a real issue or not–have you detected that the sitemap has this URL in it for your site?)

    Hello Dave,
I did not understand this question:
“(and we haven’t tested to see if this is a real issue or not–have you detected that the sitemap has this URL in it for your site?)”
Please do write differently. Google translate in this way can not help me.

Another very important thing: I did redirect.
more than 24 hours have passed: no problem.
You can repeat to me that I have to take?
I need you say again that I have to remove because it works well right now.

I do not recommend using your redirect solution, I have no idea what that will do to the plugin’s behavior. If you keep it and run into issues, you will need to remove it.

Does your sitemap have both of these URLs?

    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-ads/
    and:
    https://awpcp.com/classifieds/browse-categories/

Or just one of them? (the first one)

    Thread Starter Cristian Vacca

    (@cristianvacca)

    I have removed 301 redirect.
Is my site has both url:
    https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale (browseads)
    https://www.ilmondodellavoro.com/annunci/portale/elenco-annunci (browsecats)

Does your SITEMAP have both URLs?

I know the site does. ??

If you don’t see both URLS in the SITEMAP, then you’re fine. Google uses the sitemap to crawl.

    (@cristianvacca)

Excuse me I did not understand your question.
You’re my sitemap has both url.
Use your important plugin for awpcp: Google XML Sitemaps.
How can I set sitemap to remove url?
I have not done for fear of removing url AWPCP XML Sitemap Plugin
