• Hello,

I have to do a website redesign and I would like to use WP. (Technically, I am a complete beginner …: -0 !!!)
The website is currently with a host and I see that the host’s environment already includes a number of products
    including WP.
The hegberger therefore suggested that I could do my development online (so use their WP installed at home (creation of a subdomain
for the duration of the tests and once the tests are completed, switch to the original domain),
but then I thought that, the other solution, was also that I could maybe download the wordpres.org and thus do my development locally
(which might bring me more freedom) ???
I admit, I don’t really know which solution to go for ??

. / The 1st requires me to use an FTP tool if I want to transfer, for example, documents, photos, … as I go through my tests.

./ The 2nd at least everything is in my local environment during the tests.

And in terms of choice of themes, extensions, …. is the choice the same ??
Thank you for your advice or lived experiences !!

Locally will limit you to see that site, and no one else.
Online will allow you to let others see that site – which might be beneficial if you need to show work done to a client or for else reason let someone see the site.

Locally the main advantage is that it is faster (no internet needed, basically) and the environment is more controlled, of course.

I would never develop on a live site, but on a staging site, why not. Specially I the project is for someone, then this is probably the way to go in order to properly collaborate.

Many hosts offer so called “staging” instances, where you can with one click switch between live and staging site… and if not, then you can as you said setup a subdomain or even standalone domain and later just swap the files + database to the live site (if it is a completely fresh project).

The choices in terms of Theme, Plugin etc are exactly the same online as locally.
