• Ok so this is an interesting one – i inherited a wordpress client and there seems to be an issue with their jetpack and wordpress connection but before i disconnect it i need to determine the USER NAME for the wordpress.com account at least. (Takes breath)…

    Its snowing outside here in Minnesota again on the 24th of March…

    Ok so the question is how to determine the userid with which the jetpack is connected through before disconnecting… Any thoughts?

    The username that is used to connect to WordPress.com actually doesn’t matter, as long as the URL hasn’t changed since it was first connected. Could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

    Hmmm – let me know if you have any ideas about tracking down the wordpress.com account that it is connected to before i disconnect it. I want to disconnect it as there seems to be a problem with the connection. The stats are not showing up on the site and theiy are not able to be linked to on the wordpress.com site.

    I am actually having the same problem on interfaithpower.org, which is the California chapter of the above domain. Except I KNOW the user on interfaithpower.org and when i disconnected it, it refused to reconnect…

    I have also tested the Jetpack connection and it is saying all is okay.

    Could you send a debug to us and include this thread url in the email please?

    Tried a couple of times in a couple of ways but i dont have the instructions you mentioned above – once i get to the debugging center there are no links to contact support – just links to different forum areas…

    This was working 2 weeks ago and their have been no changes to the wordpress configuration. However, I checked several other domains with similar setups and found that they are not working properly either. So I am seriously open to the possibility that Dreamhost changed something and have a ticket into them as well…

    By the way i finally found the user name that the jetpack was connected to. I looked all over and found that NO ONE will answer the question “How do i recover my USER NAME” Its just an infinite loop sending users after password recovery. So i am going to say it here.

    If you lose your user name you are toast. A lost user name cannot be recovered no matter what.

    It can be recovered – people forget all the time. But what we can’t do is just give out information. After all, a username forms part of a login and has an attached identity.

    If a username is lost we must verify that the person requesting it is actually the person who owns it. We can send an email to a registered address for example. But we can’t just say “Here it is” as that is important private information.

    Thanks Mark. I know you cant give out information – but there are no instructions for recovering USER NAME anywhere on the planet. I looked for 3 days and have posted in this thread 4 times as well as another and no one has said anything about how i would do it. And i have access to the email associated with it, but there is no where to put it in and request my user name.

    Prove me wrong? ??

    WebBadAss: As I mentioned previously, the WordPress.com username that is associated with a Jetpack site doesn’t actually matter, in terms of the functionality of Jetpack, the site’s stats, or it’s subscribers. The important thing is the URL; the site’s ID that is associated with the site is derived from the URL that was in use when the site was first connected to WordPress.com. If that URL changed since then, or if it was originally connected while the site had a temporary URL (a common case with certain hosts), then disconnecting and reconnecting can cause Jetpack to give the site a new ID, and thus, stats and subscribers can appear to be lost. However, we are almost always able to find the previous ID in our systems, and can thus recover the “lost” stats and subscribers. If you find yourself in this situation, let me know, and I can sort it out for you.

    And then, as Mark mentioned: we don’t give out the username associated with a site, for privacy reasons. However, there is an ongoing discussion about the best method to expose the connected WordPress.com user to the site admin; you can find the issue and associated tickets/discussions here:

    Now, to get back to your issues:

    Do you still have that issue right now, with the same error message? That is an issue that Dreamhost is aware of, but it should be fixed by now. If you still have this problem, then contact Dreamhost support and tell them that you have the Jetpack connection issue. They should be able to sort you out.

    Are you able to log in to WordPress.com with that email address? If you are, then you should see your username in your Settings once you are logged in. If you can’t, then request a password recovery email sent to your email address, change the password, then log in to WordPress.com. You do not need our intervention to do this.

    Thanks Richard. I would definitely say there was a willingness to help here but nobody actually did. Nothing but love y’all, don’t take it wrong. Maybe my venting was all i needed to get it done myself. ??

    I guess at this point what I am trying to say that I worked all my stuff out or it worked itself out – but I would like to know that the questions I asked had answers to them so that I and others would know where to look for a solution to fix our problems should they happen again in the the future.

    Namely.

    1. The site not connecting to Dreamhost properly. Whatever Dreamhosts problem they seem to have fixed it quietly without so much as a whoopsidaisey. It was working perfectly, broke and now just kinda works… WHICH isn’t a WordPress problem. I see that now.

    2. The stats on WordPress in jetpack. I still cant get my WordPress stats to show in jetpack – But I found the login for WordPress directly and can see them there so at least they are accessible now. This is also likely a Dreamhost problem as my sites not on dreamhost do not have this problem.

    3. The userid associated with the domain. The URL HAS NOT changed. My setup didn’t change. I just was not the one who set it up – so when I was having my problems with Dreamhost I could not go to WordPress.com for access to logs or anything – I had NO user name – I figured there was a way to recover it – But I didn’t get help here finding it. I had to go through every email on every account associated with the domain to find it.

    I thought disconnecting and then reconnecting jetpack might fix some of these problems, but not so far…

    So all is kinda working now – I am gonna chalk the problems up to Dreamhost errors – But I have 2 other setups I inherited for which I do not know the wordpress.com Login Name. Right now I don’t need them.

    And thanks again Richard, The link above shows that what I am talking about is being discussed. Hopefully it will get worked out by the time these other sites have problems.

    It happens. I won’t hold it against you, and I want to stress that we do want to help, we just can’t give out usernames for privacy reasons, but as you saw in the github ticket, we are working on making it easier to determine the user that was used to connect.

    Yup, it was an issue that they had and fixed.

    With all the back and forth, I want to make sure I’m clear on the details for this issue. Which site? What happens when you try to view the stats in the dashboard?

    I understand your frustration. A “fix” would have been to disonnect and reconnect Jetpack using the WordPress.com account of your choice, BUT if you had trouble connecting it back, then yes, you basically would have had no way of knowing the username, and I wouldn’t have been able to give it to you.

    But I have 2 other setups I inherited for which I do not know the wordpress.com Login Name.

    For these, I suggest you simply disconnect and reconnect them from WordPress.com using the WordPress.com account of your choice, as I just mentioned. That way you can and will have access to the stats on WordPress.com right away, and you can get notifications for them, and so on and so forth. How does that sound?
